Spices are super important for cooking. You can take something bland, and make it beautiful, just by adding a few simple spices.
Here's a list of my spice cabinet staples:
Salt
Black pepper
Italian Seasoning
Cayenne Pepper
Paprika
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Cumin
Chili Powder
Basil
Oregano
Rosemary
Thyme
Parsley
Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning
Flour
Sugar
Those are the ones that I use the most often when I cook. You can make your own taco seasoning. You can make your own chili seasoning blend. You can make your own spaghetti sauce. There's simply no end to the amazing things that you can do, with spices!
My suggestion - each shopping trip, grab at least one spice. You can find them pretty cheaply at most supermarkets. I tend to shop at WalMart the most, so those are the prices that I know best. Folks, I'm talking a dollar for your basic spices. Once you get your basic spices stocked, you can check into some of the other ones - some of them can be a little more expensive - it just depends on what kinds of recipes you're looking to make. In general, though, I find that the above listed are the ones that I use the most often.
